Meet Our Beloved Mayor Joseph Gatt

Welcome, and thank you for visiting.

My name is Joseph Gatt, and I am honoured to serve as the Mayor of Mosta—the town where I was born, raised, and proudly continue to call home.

Born on 25 November 1977, I am a proud father to Maya (21) and Mattias (16). I share my life with my wife, Joan Galleposo Bagarinao, whom I married on 3 March 2026, and her wonderful children, Wyatt (17) and Zuki (14). Our blended family inspires my commitment to building a Mosta that is safe, welcoming, and full of opportunity for every family.

Alongside my mayoral responsibilities, I work full-time with the Water Services Corporation, serving within the Technical Support Offices. My professional experience has shaped the principles I bring to public service—efficiency, practical problem-solving, collaboration, and teamwork.

Public service has long been part of my family’s heritage. My father, Lawrence “Perit” Gatt, served as a Member of Parliament with the Partit Nazzjonalista from 1971 to 1996. His example instilled in me the values of integrity, responsibility, and dedication to community service.

My political journey began in 2019, when I was elected as a councillor for the Mosta Local Council. In 2024, the residents of Mosta entrusted me with the honour of serving as Mayor—a responsibility I carry with pride, humility, and unwavering commitment.

As Mayor, my goal is to continue strengthening Mosta by focusing on community wellbeing, sustainable development, efficient local services, and opportunities for future generations.

Mosta is more than a town—it is a community rich in history, resilience, and pride. I look forward to working together with residents, businesses, and organisations to continue building a bright future for our town.

Thank you for visiting.

A Strong History

Over the years, I have remained deeply connected to the people of Mosta. My professional experience in technical operations, combined with years of community involvement, has equipped me with a practical understanding of the challenges our residents face.

From improving essential services to advocating for infrastructure upgrades and supporting community initiatives, my work has always been centred on ensuring Mosta continues to grow with dignity, safety, and unity.

My leadership is guided by three pillars:

  • Listening before acting

  • Acting with transparency and fairness

  • Working with all residents, not just one side of politics

Mosta’s story is rich and resilient—and I am committed to honouring that story through service grounded in respect and accountability.

Results & Accomplishments

During my service as councillor and now as Mayor, I have remained dedicated to delivering tangible results for the Mosta community. These priorities have shaped my work:

🚦 Restoring Accessibility to Mosta Square

One of my first major actions as Mayor was reversing the partial pedestrianization of our main square to restore 24/7 free access. This was a decision driven by the needs of our residents and local business owners, ensuring that the heart of Mosta remains a functional, vibrant, and accessible hub for everyone.

🌳 The Ta' Mlit Green Regeneration Project

We successfully secured a devolution agreement for over 1,500 square meters of land in the Ta' Mlit area. This landmark project is transforming a previously neglected space into a high-quality public garden. By creating this "green haven," we are providing families with a safe, beautiful environment to gather while increasing the overall air quality and beauty of our locality.

🏗️ Infrastructure & Urban Renewal

Our commitment to quality infrastructure goes beyond simple road repairs. We have overseen the regeneration of the Tal-Qares pedestrian zone, turning a former dumping site into a modern community space. Additionally, we continue to prioritize the restoration of our historic alleyways and residential pavements to ensure safety and accessibility for the elderly and children alike.

🏛️ Protecting Local Council Autonomy

I have taken a firm stand at the national level to protect the autonomy of our Local Council. I believe that the people who live in Mosta should have the final say on the decisions that affect their daily lives—from traffic management to the preservation of our iconic Ficus trees in the Square.

🤝 Government Collaboration & Funding

By working closely with the Lands Authority, we have secured new schemes that allow the Council to manage public property at a minimal cost. This proactive approach ensures that more of our local budget is spent directly on community improvements, festivals, and the preservation of Mosta’s unique cultural heritage.

"My mission is to serve every resident—fairly, respectfully, and without political division.  Together, we can build a stronger, safer, more unified Mosta."

— Mayor Joseph Gatt
